This course is a cross-cultural, holistic overview of magic, witchcraft and religion from past and present societies around the world. Students will identify and compare a variety of supernatural beliefs and practices within the context of theoretical perspectives in anthropology. Practical influences on social and political systems, as well as biological and psychological impacts, will be explored. Special topics include mythology, symbolism, rituals, shamanism, magic, witchcraft, gods, spirits, the afterlife, cults, world religions, and contemporary religious movements. Formerly: Indians of North America. An examination of Native American Indian cultures, environments, and histories. The course will examine the major cultural areas of North America and analyze the mechanisms and causations of cultural variation and adaptation. The course will review the subsistence strategies, religions, artworks, social organizations and environments of native peoples of North America, and relate the data to theoretical models in anthropology. Contemporary and ethical issues will also be discussed. Graded or Pass/No Pass option.

Formerly: ANTH G120. This is an introductory course in the concepts, methods of inquiry and theory of biological evolution and their application to the human species. Specific focus is on molecular, Mendelian and population genetics, mechanisms of evolution of homo sapiens and non-human primates, paleoanthropology, biocultural adaptations, human variation, and current bioethical issues. It’s about the nature of language and about how people talk and why they talk the way they do. The complex intersections of language, culture, race, ethnicity, and gender will be explored through social interactions and their dynamics.
