As in the regular course, Honors students will examine elements of musical style (rhythm, melody, dynamics, texture, form, timbre), deepening the experience by considering culturally bound and intercultural musical features within the context of Western "classical" music, plus the interactions between Western and non-Western musics. However, our list of reading, listening and viewing assignments will feature a broader selection than those offered in the usual MUS G101 or HUM G120 bibliography, discography and videography. The course will also intensify the focus on research, evaluation of personal taste and critical "active" listening. Attendance at and review of three professional performances required. This course covers musical styles in rock and roll history from roots to contemporary music. Emphasis is placed on the cultural and ethnic roots of rock music styles, with emphasis on the African-American contribution to multiple sub-genres of rock music. Other multi-cultural influences in rock music will be explored, including Latin American, Mexican American, Afro-Cuban, and Caribbean influenced music. Exploration of American interpretation and presentation of the various rock musical influences throughout the twentieth and twenty-first century are central to the content of the course.
