Freshman Composition helps to develop skills in grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, and organization in order to express ideas clearly. Students will build upon those skills through writing that exposes meaning and forms arguments. In Freshman Composition, students will develop cogent thinking (clear and logical reasoning) and close reading skills. Students will practice research and documentation strategies to develop their information literacy through finding and evaluating primary and secondary sources. Students will compose a minimum 5,000 words of evaluated expository writing (conforms to California State System Freshman Composition writing standards). Letter Grade only. C-ID: ENGL 100.

This course offers instruction in analytical, critical, and argumentative writing, critical thinking, research strategies, information literacy, and proper documentation through the study of literary works from major genres, while developing students' close reading skills and promoting an appreciation for the aesthetic qualities of literature. This course offers instruction in argumentation, logical reasoning, critical analysis of non-fiction texts from different disciplines and perspectives, research strategies, information literacy, and documentation. Focuses on real-world English skills that contribute to good workplace communication. It includes English principles you already know, those you learned in the past and forgot, and those you wish you had learned. Students study grammar, English usage, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary, and dictionary use from the businessperson's viewpoint. Emphasis is placed on finding and correcting types of errors people make while speaking and writing. Graded or Pass/No Pass option.

Students will write essays in different rhetorical modes. The basic principles of written composition will be applied through writing assignments and assigned essays. The process of choosing and shaping a thesis and writing an extended, well developed essay will be stressed. English C109 fulfills the Option 1 AA or AS degree's A2 requirement. It transfers to private and out-of-state colleges and universities as the first semester of a two-semester Freshman Composition requirement. It transfers to CSU only as an elective. This course surveys the literature of ChicanX, LatinX, and Latin America from its colonial transculturation in the 15th century to present day. Readings from major authors such as Mariano Azuela, Isabel Allende, Paulo Coelho, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and more will explore cultural, aesthetic, and social trends that emerged in context with significant historical events and literary movements, such as Magical Realism and Modernismo. The content journeys through various genres, traditions, and themes, such as identity, bilingualism, and the politics of revolution. The course studies literature from the United States, Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Afro-Latin Caribbean. Letter Grade only.

Asian American and Transpacific Literature studies narratives from major authors of Asian and Asian American descent, such as Viet Thanh Nguyen, Thi Bui, Tommy Orange, Bharati Mukerjee, Maxine Hong Kingston, Jessica Hagedorn, Andrew X. Pham, Ocean Vuong, Tony Tulathimutte, Isabelle Thuy Pelaud, and Celeste Ng. The course explores the influence of Asia on American literature and the transpacific imagination inherent to the Asian immigration experience. Significant themes include war, conflict between generations, family expectations, diaspora, and immigration/ acculturation within texts that describe Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Vietnamese, Thai, Bangladeshi, Cambodian, Laotian, Pacific Islander, and South Asian/ Indian American experiences from the early mid-20th century onward. Reading content includes poetry, fiction, historical and contemporary narrative prose, and illustrated memoir that describe and/or critically examine the aesthetic, historical, cultural, sociological, environmental, and political forces at work in the texts. Black Voices: Introduction to African American literature studies major African American authors and literary movements from the vernacular tradition (such as oral epics, linguistic elements from African languages, folktales, call and response, improvisational practices, sermons, and music genres such as spirituals, gospel, blues, jazz, rap, hip-hop), the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920-30s, Realism, Naturalism, Modernism, the Black Arts Era of the 1960-70s, Civil Rights Speeches, to present-day literary works. Formerly ENGL C290. Analysis and interpretation of British Literature from the Middle Ages through the Restoration period in the eighteenth century. The course includes the literary characteristics of the major forms during this time period. This course is a survey of Gothic literature written during England's 19th century. The course will begin with the origins of the genre, its major conventions, and go on to trace the changes in the genre as measured by its historical and social contexts. Important Gothic texts, including the pre-Victorian work Frankenstein and canonical Victorian texts Dracula and Jane Eyre, will be studied in order to identify the components of 19th century British Gothic literature. Topics include vampirism, haunted mansions and female imprisonment. Graded or Pass/No Pass option.

This course is a survey of Gothic literature, concentrating on critically-acclaimed novels written during the 20th century in the United States. Students will study Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison's Beloved, The Shining by Stephen King, and Jeffrey Eugenides's The Virgin Suicides. The course will also study the 19th-century short story "Carmilla," which illustrates vampire themes, and compare the story's literary conventions to contemporary American Gothic themes.
