This class teaches students the basics of producing a literary magazine. Students gain experience in soliciting and critically reading submissions, writing skills, copy editing, and production while developing foundational critical reading, writing, and editorial skills for taking on greater editorial and production responsibilities in the future. Instruction and practice in essay writing, including using analytical thinking, choosing a thesis, assembling and organizing supporting evidence, and developing a clear tone and appropriate style. This is an advanced writing workshop for students who have already completed more than 100 pages of an original novel. Students will focus on analysis of the elements of dramatic fictional structure through examination of works in progress. In addition to generating 50-100 new pages, students will read essays on craft and engage in research into the settings and circumstances of their characters in order to lend authenticity to the narrative. This course is designed to assist students in developing and revising manuscripts to meet contemporary publication standards. Graded or Pass/No Pass option.

An intermediate scriptwriting workshop for students who have completed at least 60 pages of an original work. The emphasis at this stage will be on the refinement of structure, tone, dialogue, and character, in service to the emerging themes of the work-in-progress. Students will read essays on craft and will engage in research into the circumstances and settings featured in their scripts. After generating 30-60 new pages, students will carefully revise and edit their work, resulting in the completion of a substantial portion of their full-length plays/screenplays.
