The course begins with the encounter of Europeans, Africans, and Indigenous Americans during the 15th and 16th centuries. The course also takes into account the construction and development of the Spanish and Portuguese colonial society, the course of independence, the creation of the nation-state, the influence of foreign powers and major international wars, and the changing political environment of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. Ethnic Groups of the United States: Their Histories

This course covers the history of the United States from the pre-Columbian era to the modern day through the experiences of Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans and LatinX Americans. There will be a focus on how these racial ethnic groups helped shape the identity and culture of the United States. Additionally, the history of these groups will be analyzed by examining the interconnections of race, class, gender and social power used to struggle against racial hierarchies that created structural inequities in American society. Lastly, this course will examine the goals of the historical social justice movements which continue to combat these inequities.
