This course examines the development of children's social identities in diverse societies as influenced by families, communities, programs, and teaching. Trends and issues in diverse contemporary classrooms will be explored, including teaching and learning strategies and examination of culturally relevant and linguistically appropriate anti-bias approaches supporting all children. Course includes 10 hours of arranged fieldwork. Graded.

The class focuses on the proficiencies credential candidates are required to master before they can be issued a preliminary Multiple or Single Subject Credential. Students successfully completing a portfolio in technology proficiencies related to K-12 curriculum will receive a Proficiency Training Certificate from the Orange County Department of Education. Most, but not all, technology application skills are transferable between the Macintosh and Windows environment. Graded or Pass/No Pass option.

This course will introduce students interested in a teaching-related career to psychosocial development and interrelationships of family, school, and community resources. The course will focus on socialization development theories and collaborative practices to support child development with families and communities of diverse backgrounds. This course introduces students to the concepts and issues related to teaching diverse learners in today’s contemporary schools, Kindergarten through grade 12 (K-12). Topics include: Teaching as a profession and career, historical and philosophical foundations of the American education system, contemporary educational issues, California’s content standards and frameworks, and teacher performance standards. This course requires a minimum of 54 hours of structured fieldwork in public school elementary classroom. Graded. C-ID: EDUC 200.

This course provides an overview of collaborative educational models; family, school, community partnership models; access, equity, historical, legal, social, political perspectives for diverse students with special needs; roles and responsibilities of the paraeducator as a team member of a special education program and support for general education and special education; and the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process. This course includes 10 hours of arranged fieldwork/observations at a public school site in a classroom that supports students with special needs. Graded.

This course introduces students to the concepts and issues related to teaching diverse learners in today’s contemporary secondary schools (grades 6-12). Topics include: History, philosophy, and sociology that pertain to secondary education; introduction to California Teaching Performance Expectations and Teaching Performance Assessment; needs of special populations, English learners, struggling readers; content standards and major curriculum reform documents. The course includes 45 hours of arranged fieldwork/observations in public schools on specific course requirements. Graded.
