Dance

The OCC Dance Department provides a foundation in the theory, technique, and aesthetics of the art of dance. Faculty guide those seeking to become professional, and the recreational dancer, to master strength, flexibility, and musicality within a particular dance form while also developing insight, perception, understanding, and evaluative skills. Students explore their own creative potential and have opportunities to perform in the Robert B. Moore Theatre.

Courses are available in Modern Dance, Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Tap, Pilates, Conditioning, World Dance (African, Flamenco, Spanish, East Indian, Middle Eastern and Polynesian), music, methodology and choreography. Transfer arrangements have been articulated with CSULB, UCI, UCLA, CSUF, and Cornish School of the Arts. 
 
We offer an Associate in Arts Degree in Dance and three certificates of achievement: Dance Instructor, Pilates Instructor, and World Dance Instructor. These unique vocational programs prepare students for a variety of job opportunities.

Strength and flexibility exercises and their application to dance technique will be selected to target major muscle groups that need maximum efficiency and range of motion. Using traditional yoga postures and breathing techniques, this course is designed for the needs of the training dancer. Yoga postures to increase strength and flexibility, as well as restorative postures will be taught in order to bring about improvement in the execution of dance movements. Directed improvisation assignments and problem solving lead to free exploration of movement expressed through individual movement vocabulary.
