English
Students interested in imaginative forms like literature and film; the intersection of language and power; the historical, political, and cultural contexts and narratives that produce our understandings of race, gender, sexuality, and more; the intricacies of storytelling and creative expression; and the craft of argumentation will find an intellectual home in the English major. To study English is to achieve freedom of expression. By exposing you to the many ways people have written and talked, the English major can free you to read and write and think beyond what is normally asked of you. Inviting students to read across genres and media, historical periods, national and cultural traditions, and theoretical perspectives, all courses within the major introduce students to British, American, and Anglophone literature and cultural production, as well as world literature in translation, and offer extensive practice in the interconnected skills of close and careful reading, sustained and rigorous analysis and interpretation, and clear and convincing written communication. The English major thereby serves as a foundation for transfer-level study of literature and culture, rhetoric, and creative writing while also preparing students for a variety of post-graduate and career opportunities in:
- The Arts (as writers, editors, producers, and archivists in film, television, and music),
- Journalism (as writers, investigative reporters, proofreaders, and editors for print and online magazines and newspapers),
- Publishing (as editors, agents, and book representatives),
- Education (for further study of literature at the graduate level, K-12 or college teaching, curriculum development),
- Law (as lawyers, paralegals, and investigators),
- Medicine (as doctors, nurses, and clinicians),
- Psychology (as psychiatrists, psychologists, or social workers),
- The Sciences (as technical writers and editors),
- The Video Gaming Industry (as writers, editors, and marketers),
- Business and Advertising (as researchers, copywriters, high-level assistants, public relations specialists, and more).
