This course is designed for Spanish speakers or for students who are linguistically equivalent to a heritage speaker of Spanish. Students will develop their existing Spanish language skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking through the study of academic Spanish vocabulary and grammar. Students will review historical and current events, art, culture, diversity, and literary works of Chicanx, Latinx, and Spanish writers to enrich the knowledge of the Spanish-speaking world and develop an appreciation for the diversity of Hispanic cultures of all Spanish-speaking countries and in the United States. This course is a continuation of SPAN G160 and is designed for Spanish speakers or for students who are linguistically equivalent to a heritage speaker of Spanish. Students will further develop their existing Spanish language skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking through the analysis of literary works and composition and the study of advanced grammar. Students will analyze historical and current events, art, culture, diversity, and literary works of Chicanx, Latinx, and Spanish writers and explore the geographical and linguistic diversities of the Spanish-speaking world to value the diversity of Hispanic cultures of all Spanish-speaking countries and in the United States. Formerly: Elementary Spanish. This course is designed for students who have no prior knowledge or have minimal knowledge of the Spanish language. Students will focus on mastery of grammar fundamentals while developing the four basic language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This course is equivalent to two years of high school Spanish. Graded or Pass/No Pass option. C-ID: SPAN 100.

It teaches culture and facilitates language acquisition through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will interact with authentic language in context, interpret various texts in Spanish, and compare civilizations and cultures fostering awareness of the diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. This course is the second course at the intermediate level for non-heritage speakers of Spanish. Students will focus on intermediate-advanced oral communication, listening, reading, and writing based on diverse cultural and literary materials. Students will develop the ability to think critically by analyzing different types of texts in Spanish and make cross-cultural comparisons thereby increasing appreciation and awareness of the diverse cultures and traditions of the Spanish-speaking world. This course is taught primarily in Spanish. Graded or Pass/No Pass option. C-ID: SPAN 210.
