This course is an introductory overview of social welfare in the U.S. and the societal institutions that structure the provision of social services and services to individuals and groups. The course covers the historical perspectives of U.S. social work and human services structures, with emphasis on the evolution of social welfare programs and institutions, major U.S. court and policy decisions, contemporary social problems, and modern service delivery systems. Further exploration of current policies, procedures, and the tasks of culturally responsive social workers and human service workers is also covered. Students will explore professional, ethical, and cultural issues facing the fields of social work and human services. Graded.

With concurrent enrollment in the fieldwork course and through professional development guidance, students will acquire and practice employable skills, competencies, and professional qualities needed for future employment.       This course is designed to facilitate a supervised field experience within a human services community organization, agency, or institution. Students will be able to connect theory-to practice through observation and practical experience, as well as develop new skills outside of the classroom environment in preparation for gaining employment in the human services field. The student will be required to document 108 hours of supervised field experience within a human services environment. Graded.
