This program is designed to prepare students for careers as automotive smog technicians. The curriculum aligns wih the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification areas A6 Electrical Electronics, A8 Engine Performance, and L1 Advanced Engine Performance. This prepares students who are entering the workforce for the first time as well as those in the workforce who want to improve skills to advance their careers. Upon completion of this program, students will have developed the skills required to diagnose and repair automotive emission systems.
Program Level Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Analyze diagnostic trouble codes and freeze frame data to determine root cause of emissions failures.
- Describe the laws, regulations, and procedures associated with consumer authorization of inspections and the overall administration of the Smog Check Program.
- Perform Smog check functional tests on various vehicle designs.
- Analyze emission monitor rediness on vehicles equipped with second generation On-Board Diagnostics systems (OBDII).
- Describe catalytic converter performance standards of practice expected by Smog Check Inspectors.
