Course Description

This course is designed to develop further the abilities students have attained to comprehend and converse daily in spoken and written Vietnamese at an intermediate level. Reading and writing skills are stressed and enhanced. Cultural notes, authentic reading materials, literary selections, and grammar beyond the phrasal level present new concepts to stimulate vocabulary acquisition, to provoke expressive ability, and to generate communicative competency. Cultural and philosophical aspects of the Vietnamese-speaking world, including the world of Vietnamese-Americans, will also be discussed. PREREQUISITE: VIET C185 or VIET C185B or equivalent competency. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

  1. Demonstrate ability to respond orally and in writing in two dialects in intermediate-level spoken and written Vietnamese.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of unique cultural aspects of the Vietnamese-speaking people.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Interpret and appraise early intermediate level spoken and written Vietnamese formulated by native speakers and compose and construct oral and written responses.
  • 2. Compare and contrast various aspects of the cultures, beliefs, and world views of the peoples of Vietnamese-speaking countries and regions with those of the United States orally and in writing at the early intermediate level.

Instructional Techniques

A variety of activities, (including lecture employing current technology and/or handouts, video and/or audio presentations, pair and group work) will be employed. Intensive and extensive listening and reading in the target language is directed toward raising learners awareness of the lexical nature of language. Activities will be structured to enable the learners to comprehend lexical phrases as unanalyzed "chunks" and to use whole phrases without necessarily having to analyze their constituent parts.

Research and write an essay on Vietnams cultural celebrations, religious holidays and/or dialects.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Compare and contrast cultural practices, history, geography, and cultural diversity in Vietnam with those of the United States.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Pairs or groups will engage in conversation in intermediate level Vietnamese to a task which involves role-playing on a variety of topics chosen by the instructor to simulate real-life situations.

Eligible Disciplines

Foreign languages: Masters degree in the language being taught OR bachelors degree in the language being taught AND masters degree in another language or linguistics OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
