Course Description
Formerly: Stage Crew Activity. Student will gain practical experience in the technical preparation and operation of theatrical productions presented to the community. Student will be involved in one or more of the following areas of concentration and responsibility: stage management, house management, stage crew activity, scenery building and painting, props, lighting, make-up, costumes, sound and/or special effects at an introductory level. Students will identify a preference for stage crew/technical theater production assignments through the interview process. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC. C-ID: THTR 192. C-ID: THTR 192.

Course Objectives
- 1. Understand and use the technical and operational skills required for a technical theater crew member.
- 2. Identify then employ basic technical skills to address the individual technical demands of a live play or musical production
- 3. Responsibly execute technical requirements for auditions, rehearsals, technical rehearsals, performances and strike as assigned.

Collaborative responsibilities Stage managers and crew supervisors Directors, choreographers, musical directors Laboratory/Studio Activity Play scripts and librettos Blueprints, construction patterns, lighting plots, cue sheets and other technical theater production materials Attendance at live theatrical productions for the purpose of written critical evaluation Written semester project or projects depending on area of study chosen Literary and historical research as appropriate to the technical theater or stage crew assignment The ability to identify and clearly understand the challenges present in the area of technical theater study chosen while executing all required skills The student's ability at diagnosing and solving unfamiliar problems by synthesizing all of the concepts presented in the class will contribute to an overall growth and sense of accomplishment, and a keener understanding of the working procedures in the technical areas of the theater. Student will be expected to improve and advance their knowledge and demonstrate proficiency in the area of technical theater study chosen through demonstration of the learned material and presentation of written cue sheets and other written materials. Skill evaluations will include correct and safe operation of equipment and set, props, costume, make-up, lighting, sound and special effects preparation and execution. Drama/theater Arts: Master's degree or Master of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance OR bachelor's degree or Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama/theater/performance AND master's degree in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature, or humanities OR the equivalent. Master's degree required.
Stagecraft: Any bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience, 1. Published play scripts and libretto. Varies by production.
