Course Description

An advanced practicum in stage direction. Students in their second semester will work independently under faculty supervision to direct or stage manage a play or project in the OCC Theatre Department. ADVISORY: THEA A275. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Develop and implement a directorial concept for a short play or project.
  2. Communicate directorial ideas to actors and other production personnel.
  3. Direct the rehearsal and the production of a play or performance project.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Recognize and perform duties and responsibilities of a one-act or full-length play director.
  • 2. Develop and implement a directorial concept for production.
  • 3. Help actors interpret play scripts to develop characters.
  • 4. Organize a rehearsal and production schedule for a one-act or longer play or project.
  • 5. Apply principles of criticism to improve productions.
  • 6. Synthesize all communal elements required for creating a play or project into a unified production.
  • 7. Solve discipline problems in cast and crew.
  • 8. Work with other directors and production staff as part of a student play festival or repertory theatre production.
  • 9. Coordinate production schedule and requirements with OCC theatre department faculty-directed productions

Lecture Content

Participation and communication as a director in production meetings. Rehearsals and performance duties as a director or stage manager. Organization of the production: auditions, casting, rehearsal schedules, production meetings, design meetings, performances. The director or stage managernas leader: problems of directing and production implementation and organization, discipline and dealing with problems. Post-production critiques-positive criticism as a tool for learning and improvement.

Lab Content

Lab Content: The second semester director or stage manager will work independently under faculty supervision to: Develop and implement a directorial concept for a short or full-length play or project Schedule and complete acting auditions, acting rehearsals, production meetings,technical planning sessions and technical rehearsals.  Hours Arranged/ Other: Planning rehearsals, mwwting with actors, designers and crew. Text research and analysis. Oversee final rehearsals and stage performances. Meet with faculty supervisor to critique the finished production.  Other/ Hours Arranged Content: Rehearsals. Organizing and supervising Production Meetings with designers, actors and crew. Advanced level text analysis and research.

Instructional Techniques

Demonstrations of directing techniques, production meetings, rehearsal and technical rehearsal critiques, post-performance critiques of plays and projects.

Playscripts, research materials related to script and/or play production.

Production schedules. Directors workbook/script with notated cues, prop and costume lists.

Out-of-class Assignments

Production meetings, rehearsals, research and planning of production elements.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Planning and implementation of directorial concept. Organization and implementation of rehearsals and performances. Post-performance critiques

Written workbook on major directing project, skills demonstration and problem solving during planning meetings, rehearsal, technical rehearsals and critiques.
