Course Description
This course introduces and explores the basic principles of stage direction. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.
Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)
- Develop a directorial concept for a scene.
- Communicate directorial ideas to actors and other production personnel.
- Direct the rehearsal and the production of a monologue and a scene.
Course Objectives
- 1. Recognize duties and responsibilities of a play director.
- 2. Analyze a play script to develop a concept for production.
- 3. Help actors interpret play scripts to develop characters.
- 4. Organize a rehearsal and production schedule.
- 5. Apply principles of criticism to improve productions.
- 6. Deduce conclusions from the study of the role of the director in the theatre to understand the current place of the play director.
- 7. Understand the principles of play management.
- 8. Engage in post-performance critiques.
Lecture Content
Duties and responsibilities of a director/historical development Scenes - ongoing rehearsal of scenes for presentation to class throughout semester. Constructive criticism, peers and instructors, rehearsal techniques, developing characters, staging, objectives, in-class scenes to illustrate scene aspects Organizing a production - auditions and casting, rehearsal schedules, working with designers, production meetings, discipline Analyzing a play - play structure, research methods, subtext, viewing video of play, A Walk In The Woods, discussion of symbolism and structure Problems of directing - being a leader, enforcing discipline, dealing with problems The philosophy of directing - discussion of chapters in text: Art, consciousness, belief, unity Intuition, creativity, positation The cornerstones of success - lecture/discussion on the purpose of theatre Critiques of productions - how to criticize, receiving criticism Major project choices - directing play in rep, directing a film/video, paper on directing topic. Workbook/ journal production Principles and duties of stage mangement.
Lab Content
Lab Content: Students will work under faculty supervision to choose, analyze and plan scenes, monologues or short plays as a director or stage manager. Students will direct or stage manage actors in prepararation and performance of assigned scenes, monologues or short plays. Students will take part in post-performance critiques and discussions. Other/Hours Arranged Content: Planning rehearsals, meetings with actors, designers and crew. Text research and analysis.

Instructional Techniques
Lectures on directing topics, class discussions, in-class directing assignments, scenes prepared during hours arranged and presented in class, critiques of scenes and repertory productions, reading assignment, oral reports and demonstrations of directing techniques
Reading Assignments
The students will read and analyze playscripts and related research sources to prepare for directing a scene from a play.
Writing Assignments
The students must complete a workbook analyzing a script and detailing organization of a production.
Out-of-class Assignments
Study and preparation of script for rehearsal and performance. Research and analysis of script and other playscript-related resources.
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Exams on lectures and textbook, evaluation of two scenes, oral report on a famous director, verbal evaluation of a directing project.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Exams on lectures and textbook, workbook on directing project, and final exam. Skills demonstrated by performance of assigned scene(s).
