Course Description
A practical introduction to basic make-up techniques for theatre and film. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC. C-ID: THTR 175.C-ID: THTR 175.
Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)
- Differentiate among varying make-up, supplies, application and techniques.
- Apply stage make-up to create varying effects.
- Collaborate with students and faculty to create stage make-up effects.
Course Objectives
- 1. Identify the various types of makeup commonly used in theater and film.
- 2. Describe the steps used in makeup for a variety of characters
- 3. Use makeup to interpret an authors characterization
- 4. Analyze a visual characterization through makeup design
- 5. Interpret a production through makeup design
- 6. Explain and demonstrate safety and hygiene procedures for the field of makeup design.
- 7. Demonstrate proper knowledge of the preparation of the skin and the removal of the makeup products.
Lecture Content
1. Functions of makeup in the theater Facial anatomy Color theory Design basics Designing standard characters with paint Three dimensional techniques Symbolic makeup design Rendering designs Show research for characters Application of facial hair Application of derma wax, scars and wounds Application of blood and gore effects
Lab Content
The student will demonstrate the selection and correct use of make-up tools, materials and techniques under the instructors supervision. Students will be critiqued by the instructor at the conclusion of each lab section. The content of the lab portion will follow the lecture content and will include the following hands-on areas of study: -color theory, use and blending -standard character make up -3-D effects -Symbolic make-up -Rendering of 2-D designs onto the face -Facial hair, derma wax, scars, wounds and blood effects
