Course Description

This course provides instruction and supervised participation in theatre rehearsal and performance of a stage musical. Students will gain practical acting and singing experience at a beginning level. Enrollment eligibility is based on a successful audition; this requirement will be validated by the instructor during the first week of enrollment. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC

Course Objectives

  • 1. Evaluate and analyze a script for rehearsal and performance
  • 2. Create and dramatize the behavioral life of an ensemble/chorus character in rehearsal and performance of a stage musical.
  • 3. Apply basic level skills and methods to performing a musical role onstage
  • 4. Demonstrate a strong work ethic within a professional framework of collaboration
  • 5. Recognize and demonstrate their collaborative responsibilities as an ensemble/chorus member with the director, musical director, choreographer, actors and crew in rehearsal and performance

Evaluation of the historical and thematic elements of the play a. The authors intentions b. The political, social, historical, philosophical and moral context of the play III. Actors script evaluation a. Scoring the role b. Creation of character, time and place obligations for the script.   IV. Acting skill approaches a. Relationship wprk with the other actors b. Creation of the behavioral and emotional life of the character. c. Outlining the needs and pursuits of the character. V. Staging a. Working with the director, musical director and choreographer. b. The following content will be covered in a combination of 90 scheduled lab hours and 18 arranged lab hours. Reading, memorization, character analysis. Student must complete all rehearsal and performance assignments.

Research character and script analysis, and rehearsals. Students must complete all rehearsal and performance assignments.

Written character analysis. Skill demonstration by successful rehearsal and performance.
