Course Description

An introduction to technical theatre and the creation of scenic elements. Includes basic concepts of design, painting techniques, set construction, set movement, prop construction, backstage organization, and career possibilities. Students will work on OCC stage productions under faculty supervision. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Course Objectives

• 1. Recognize and use backstage and shop terminology, tools, materials and techniques.
• 2. Organize a basic scenic construction project, including reading plans, selecting materials, selecting tools, and working safely.
• 3. Analyze scenic production problems; evaluate alternatives and recommend solutions.
• 4. Work collaboratively with designers, technicians, and other theatre personnel.
• 5. Develop capability to solve unfamiliar problems often encountered in theatre productions.
• 6. Recognize crew organization.

I. Protocol and safety in the scene shop and backstage . II. Technical production organization and equipment. III. Basic scenic and prop construction and painting. IV. Theatrical rigging and safety. V. Scene design concepts. VI. Interpretation of ground plans and technical drawings. VII. How designers and technicians work collaboratively. VIII. Working as a crew member on a production.
