Course Description

An introduction to acting and dramatic literature. Includes analysis of plays and dramatic structure, rehearsal techniques and performance of scenes and monologues. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Evaluate and discuss dramatic texts in literary terms and performance terms.
  2. Develop and perform scenes and monologues based on dramatic texts.
  3. Cooperate and collaborate with others in rehearsal and performance.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Gather acting skills, acquire confidence, and utilize in performance before classmates.
  • 2. Analyze plays and psychology of characters.
  • 3. Synthesize acting process into life experience and explanation of self.
  • 4. Deduce conclusions regarding blocking to illustrate line readings.
  • 5. Evaluate dramatic structure and explain its application to plays.
  • 6. Compare and contrast written words with performed words.
  • 7. Apply principles learned to develop critical thinking skills pertaining to film, television, and literature.
  • 8. Identify, anticipate, and pose problems in interplay with fellow students in preparation of scenes.

Lecture Content

Improvisational exercises/theatre games designed to acquaint students with acting process Lecture/demonstration/quiz on acting and theatre terminology. Lecture/demonstration on techniques of recording blocking Block/rehearse/perform scenes staged by instructor Lecture/demonstration/performance of monologue Outline expectations with regard to motivational units, vocal variety, staging, and opening action Examination of dramatic structure, plots, solutions, conflict Brief history of theatre origins Essay exam evaluating student analyses of plays read and performed and their relationship to # 5 (above) Students select scenes to be performed and analyze, block, and present them
