Course Description
This course will be taught by Special Programs music faculty with assistance and mentoring from field professionals. Students will get hands-on experience organizing digital and physical items that they will frequently use in their future Music Industry job, such as sheet music, musical instruments, and playlists. They will also learn how to clean, assemble, and tune instruments such as guitars and drums. And they will learn about basic customer service protocols and public safety, all of which can be applied to a number of entry-level positions in the Music Industry. Noncredit. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.
Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)
- Demonstrate ability to complete these basic computer operations: Scan tickets, look up names in a database, run a slideshow, and edit a spreadsheet.
- Demonstrate ability to organize at least three different music items such as sheet music, instruments, and playlists.
- Demonstrate ability to properly clean, maintain, and tune musical instruments - strings, percussion, and winds.
- Demonstrate an understanding of customer service, public safety, and money handling in ways that they will intersect with Music Industry entry-level jobs. Students will have experience solving Music Industry-specific challenges in these areas.
Course Objectives
- 1. Be able to operate basic computer tasks such as spreadsheets, databases, scanners, and slideshow presentation software.
- 2. Demonstrate ability to handle cash and credit card transactions with a customer
- 3. Properly change and tune at least one guitar or ukulele string using a digital tuner
- 4. Be able to complete their tasks on time and help the class maintain focus
- 5. Participate in a music event in the community as a volunteer
- 6. Set up a stage according to a floor plan
- 7. Demonstrate ability to assemble, disassemble, and clean a brass instrument, inside and out
