Course Description

This course will be taught by Special Programs music faculty with assistance and mentoring from field professionals. Students will get a basic knowledge of musical terms, concepts, and notation. This knowledge will be given practical application as students learn the basics of singing and playing a simple melodic instrument. Some students may come into the program with performance experience and may develop their performing skills further during this coursework, but it is not the emphasis of this program. Talent or experience in performing is not a prerequisite for this vocational program. Noncredit. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Demonstrate a basic understanding of music terms, notation, instruments, and ensembles.
  2. Participate competently in a live performance.
  3. Demonstrate basic competency on an instrument of their choice.
  4. Demonstrate basic competency with their own singing voice.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Identify major instruments by sight and sound.
  • 2. Sight-read simple 8-bar written notation (rhythm and pitch) on chosen instrument.
  • 3. Sing a 16-bar solo with healthy vocal technique, matching pitch, with clear diction.
  • 4. Listen to class performances and recordings with no breaks in focus.
  • 5. Complete a concert report worksheet from a recent outside-of-class performance.
  • 6. Participate in an all-class performance competently and independently.
  • 7. Put instruments and supplies away gently and properly after each use.
