Course Description
Designed to provide the student with intellectual disabilities an understanding of the customs and cultures of various nationalities, ethnic, and religious groups; course will utilize holidays as a focal point for exploring customs, art, music, food, and special traditions. Noncredit. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

- Describe common customs, cultures, and institutions, and identify and explain citizen rights and responsibilities in American culture.
- Compare and contrast American institutions and customs with those of other countries.
Course Objectives
- 1. Identify five common customs in American society.
- 2. Describe five holidays and relate the historical background as well as activities associated with each.
- 3. Describe similarities as well as differences between nationalities and cultures.
- 4. Explain the relationship between culture and the individual.
- 5. Recognize, distinguish, and appreciate the variety of cultures.
- 6. Identify subsistence patterns as related to geographic regions.
- 7. Evaluate typical institutions in American culture and relate similarities and/or differences to other cultures.
- 8. Compare traits of different periods in civilization and relate similarities and differences to present-day societies.
- 9. Distinguish and exemplify rights and responsibilities of citizens in America.
- 10. Formulate discussions and participate in activities related to current cultural events.
