Course Description

Advanced application of clinical practice procedures and therapeutic techniques performed under the guidance of a speech pathologist. Client observation, treatment protocols, record keeping procedures, and discussion of case study management issues are also covered. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Apply advanced clinical skills to Speech-Language Pathologist directed therapy plans, document and record appropriate information in client records, and demonstrate professional behaviors in the clinical setting.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Apply Speech Pathologist directed procedures per individual client needs
  • 2. Demonstrate the use of protocols in client treatment.
  • 3. Analyze client response to treatment protocols.
  • 4. Record appropriate information in client records
  • 5. Report changes in client status to Speech Pathologist and appropriate personnel.
  • 6. Apply appropriate screening per the direction of the Speech Pathologist.
  • 7. Differentiate normal and abnormal levels of results.
  • 8. Design schedule of client contact.
  • 9. Demonstrate professional behaviors in the clinical setting.
  • 10. Demonstrate application of didactic information to client analysis and care.

Instructional Techniques

A combination of techniques demonstration and application of skills in observation, documentation, application of protocols with patients.  Individual and paired activities with discussion and instructor feedback. Direct observation by Speech Pathologist. Discussion and presentation of client case issues and protocols.

Reading Assignments

Reading of goals and objectives to develop therapy plans. (Approximately 2 hours per week)

Writing Assignments

Student must demonstrate enhanced written skills in the documentation of detailed client therapy outcomes, meeting legal guidelines. (Time included in above)

Out-of-class Assignments

Student must demonstrate enhanced written skills in the documentation of detailed client therapy outcomes, meeting legal guidelines. (Approximately 3 hours per week)

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Student written records of client therapy and conditions. Student completion of clinical task evaluations. Critique of student skills as compared to program developed standards

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Student must demonstrate enhanced written skills in the documentation of detailed client therapy outcomes, meeting legal guidelines.

Eligible Disciplines

Speech language pathology: Masters degree in speech pathology, speech language pathology, speech language and hearing sciences, communicative disorders, communicative disorders and sciences, communication sciences and disorders, or education with a concentration in speech pathology, OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
