Course Description
Application of clinical practice procedures and techniques as required of a speech-language pathology assistant under the supervision of a speech language pathologist. Transfer Credit: CSU.
Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)
- Apply Speech-Language Pathologist directed therapy plans per individual client needs, document and record appropriate information in client records, and demonstrate professional behaviors in the clinical setting.
Course Objectives
- 1. Apply Speech Pathologist directed procedures per individual client needs
- 2. Demonstrate the use of protocols in client assessment and treatment.
- 3. Analyze client response to treatment protocols.
- 4. Record appropriate information in client records
- 5. Report changes in client status to Speech Pathologist and appropriate personnel
- 6. Apply appropriate screening formats per the direction of the Speech Pathologist.
- 7. Differentiate normal and abnormal levels of results.
- 8. Design schedule of client contact.
- 9. Demonstrate professional behaviors in the clinical setting.
- 10. Demonstrate application of didactic information to client analysis and care.

Instructional Techniques
A combination of techniques demonstration and application of skills in observation, documentation, application of protocols with patients. Individual and paired activities with discussion and instructor feedback. Direct observation by speech pathologist holding a clear and valid credential.
Reading Assignments
Reading of goals and objectives to develop therapy plans. (Approximately 2 hours per week)
Writing Assignments
Student must demonstrate enhanced written skills in the documentation of detailed client therapy outcomes, meeting legal guidelines. Prepare resume for use after graduation. (Time included in above out-of-class assignments)
Out-of-class Assignments
Student must demonstrate enhanced written skills in the documentation of detailed client therapy outcomes, meeting legal guidelines. Prepare resume for use after graduation. (Approximately 3 hours per week)
Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Eligible Disciplines
Speech language pathology: Master's degree in speech pathology, speech language pathology, speech language and hearing sciences, communicative disorders, communicative disorders and sciences, communication sciences and disorders, or education with a concentration in speech pathology, OR the equivalent. Master's degree required.
