Course Description
This course begins the scientific study of the effects of social influences on human behavior and mental processes. It considers individual human behavior in relation to the social environment. The power of the situation, other individuals, and the social group will be examined. Topics include aggression, prejudice and stereotypes, interpersonal attraction, attitudes and attitude change, conformity, group phenomena, gender roles, cultural norms, person perception, and social cognition. Writing Assignments
Analytical essays applying the Sociopsychological concepts to concrete examples. Papers critically analyzing published research reports and articles related to Social psychology. Essay questions on exams. In class writing assignments, individually and in group work.
Out-of-class Assignments
Instructor may assign activities which ask students to do research and explore contemporary issus in Social Psychology. This may include a formal APA writing assignments.
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
1. Objective quizzes will measure understanding of textbook and ancillary course topics 2. Critical analysis essay questions 3. Students will read and critically analyze social psychological research reports. 4. Assignments involving critical analysis of principles and theories of social psychology will be made.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
1. Students will write reports and longer papers critically analyzing social psychological principles and theories. 2. Students will evaluate the appropriateness of social psychological applications to social problems. 3. Students will write an APA style paper.
Eligible Disciplines
Psychology: Masters degree in psychology OR bachelors degree in psychology AND masters degree in counseling, sociology, statistics, neuroscience, or social work OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
