Course Description

Faculty directed study into the conception, development, planning and installation of photographic exhibitions. Students work closely with faculty in the running of the photography department’s three gallery spaces. Instruction is offered at intermediate and intermediate/advanced levels. Recommended for photography majors. Counts toward '200' level elective course requirement. PREREQUISITE: PHOT A120, PHOT A120H, or PHOT A123. Transfer Credit: CSU.

  1. Understand the many skills involved in running a photography gallery.
  2. Demonstrate an ability to correctly install and de-install a photography exhibition.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the many skills required to create a schedule of exhibitions.
  • 2. Demonstrate the ability to sequence and install an exhibition.
  • 3. Demonstrate the ability to correctly pack artwork for safe transit.

1. Review of individual students knowledge of the area to be studied and goals to be achieved. 2. Seeking out exhibitions. Writing submission requests and placing them in photographic journals and websites. 3. Creating a schedule for all three photography galleries. 4. Viewing and sorting submissions. Planning an exhibition program for the calendar year. 5. Corresponding with exhibiting artists. Ensuring work arrives safely and on time. 6. Exhibition design and installation. Methods of sequencing and hanging different types of work.  7. De-installing an exhibition and packing it up for safe return to the artist.

Instructional Techniques

1. Individual and small group meetings with instructor. 2. Discussion and critique of work of work submitted.  3. Assigned readings as appropriate.  4. Evaluation and critique of student performance while installing exhibitions.

Writing Assignments

Writing submission requests and placing them in photographic journals and websites.

Students will demonstrate critical thinking skills in evaluating work submitted for exhibition as well as in the sequencing of each exhibition.

Practical skills, along with the ability to select and use the correct tools will be acquired and demonstrated during the hanging of exhibitions.

Eligible Disciplines

Photography: Masters degree in photography, fine arts, or art OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in art history or humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
