Course Description

Provides an overview of the history of photography from 1800 to the present. The work of major practitioners is discussed, as well as lesser known figures, and the trends, movements, and artist groups that have shaped the course of the medium. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

  1. Recognize the work of the most important practitioners of photography, understand the ideas and thinking behind these works and identify the techniques used to create them.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Discuss with accuracy the history and traditions of photography from 1800 to the present.
  • 2. Develop an aesthetic appreciation of major photographic practitioners as well as lesser known figures.
  • 3. Develop an aesthetic appreciation of the aesthetic and conceptual concerns underlying photographic practice.
  • 4. Recall the relationships between the history of photography and the social histories it both shapes and records.
  • 5. Discuss with accuracy some ways in which photography has shaped society.
  • 6. Discuss with accuracy some ways in which photography has influenced the other visual arts.
  • 7. Develop an appreciation of the technical development of photography.
  • 8. Discuss with accuracy the relationship between social events and the work of certain individual photographers.
