Course Description

This course is a nursing clinical course, the focus is on the clinical experience and application of nursing care management for adult patients with mental health problems. The nursing process will be utilized as a tool to direct nursing care. Concept-based curriculum provides the structure for the curriculum and is threaded throughout the course. PREREQUISITE: NURS G160 and NURS G160C. COREQUISITE: NURS G295. Transfer Credit: CSU.

  2. Perform mental status assessment based on patient's clinical status.
  3. Interpret pertinent assessment data to determine priority of care, potential risk behaviors and promote patient safety.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Demonstrate a basic mental health assessment using evidence-based practice.
  • 2. Apply the nursing process to provide evidence based nursing care to meet the psychological, developmental, sociocultural and physiological functioning on a patient with a mental health diagnosis.
  • 3. Use a standard communication technique to communicate with members of the healthcare team. Work with interdisciplinary collaborative teams when providing patient care.
  • 4. Practice therapeutic technique to improve patients mental health.
  • 5. Appraise resources needed to provide access to quality care for patients diagnosed with mental disorders. Describe activities and therapies that promote mental health.
  • 6. Incorporate the use of informatics and technology, including navigating electronic health records, to provide patient care.

Lab Content

Clinical evaluation tool is used to evaluate students performance during healthcare and community experiences. Healthcare and Community Experiences: Students experience hands-on activities weekly. Human Patient Simulation (HPS): Simulated scenarios enhance learning through directly relating theory to the clinical setting in an interactive environment. Nursing Education Simulation Technology (NEST) Center: Practice and demonstrate competence in nursing skills. Skills: Perform mental health interventions for improved patient outcomes.  Based on evidence-based practice: Demonstrate knowledge of medication, interventions and therapeutic communication to patients diagnosed with mental disorders. Assessment and care management: Demonstrate a mental status exam Provide education on common acute and chronic mental health disorders Practice confidential interaction with patients and Health Care Team members to meet the needs of patients with mental health disorders. Differentiate between activities that can and cannot be delegated, how and to whom they can be delegated.
