Course Description
This course is a nursing clinical course that focuses on the clinical experience and application of nursing care management for pediatric patients. The nursing process will be utilized as a tool to direct nursing care. Concept-based curriculum provides the structure of the curriculum and is threaded throughout the course. PREREQUISITE: NURS G170, NURS G170C, NURS G295, and NURS G295C. COREQUISITE: NURS G285. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Objectives
- Organize a focused assessment based on patient’s clinical status, including a developmental assessment on pediatric patients if applicable.
- Determine pertinent assessment data related to patients’ problems.
- Apply the nursing process by identifying priority of care to pertinent patient populations.
- Utilize therapeutic verbal and nonverbal communication that promotes caring, therapeutic relationships with individuals and families.
- Plan a culturally appropriate, evidence-based teaching intervention for each assigned patient and/or family.
- Adhere to patient safety practices and clinical agency safety policies.
- Identify safe patient care according to core measures.
- Apply the use of evidence-based information to ensure safe and effective patient care.
- Collaborate with other interdisciplinary professionals to coordinate patient care.
- Integrate information technology resources into the provision of patient care.
- Integrate professional, ethical, and legal concepts into nursing practice.
- Demonstrate thorough preparation and application of theory and evidence consistent with course content.
- Demonstrate professional presentation, attitude, and behavior at all times while in lab, clinical, and simulation.
- Utilizes constructive feedback for clinical performance improvement.
Lab Content
- Healthcare and Community Experiences: students experience hands-on activities weekly.
- Simulation: simulated scenarios enhance learning through directly relating theory to the clinical setting in an interactive environment.
- Nursing Lab Center
- Practice and demonstrate competence in nursing skills.
- Skills: perform psychomotor skills and/or interventions for improved patient outcomes. Based on evidence-based practice and evaluated through use of a skills rubric.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Students will demonstrate critical thinking by applying the Nursing Clinical Judgement Model to assignments, simulations, and lab/clinical performance. Students will assess clinical data to define patient needs, determine and prioritize clinical problems, formulate the nursing care plan, employ nursing interventions, and evaluate patient outcomes.
