Course Description
This course focuses on the clinical experience and application of nursing care for adult/geriatric patients with common acute/chronic problems. The nursing process will be utilized as a tool to direct nursing care. Concept-based curriculum provides the structure of the curriculum and is threaded throughout the course. PREREQUISITE: NURS G160 and NURS G160C. COREQUISITE: NURS G170. Transfer Credit: CSU.

- Apply the nursing process to provide direct care to meet the physical and psychosocial needs of the adult/geriatric patient with common health problems that adheres to legal, ethical, and professional standards.
- Evaluate cultural differences to provide evidence-based care for the adult/geriatric patient.
- Apply pathophysiology of common acute/chronic health problems of the adult/geriatric patient to patient care.
- Develop a patient-centered collaborative plan of care.
- Use information technology in collaboration with nursing and healthcare teams to facilitate communication and to coordinate patient care.
Course Objectives
- Employ an adult/geriatric assessment using clinical judgment measurement model and evidence-based practice.
- Examine assessment findings to identify potential health problems.
- Apply the pathophysiology of acute/chronic conditions to provide patient care.
- Develop evidence-based patient care plan founded on the clinical judgment measurement model to meet a patient's physical, psychosocial, and cultural needs.
- Demonstrate advanced psychomotor skills.
- Utilize interdisciplinary collaboration teams when providing care to the adult/geriatric patient.
- Report one clinical agency quality improvement activity in a health care or community setting.
- Use informatics and technology, including electronic health records, to collect and document patient care for the adult/geriatric patient.
- Practice adherence to legal, ethical, and professional standards of practice to provide nursing care for the adult/geriatric patient.
Lab Content
- A clinical evaluation tool is used to evaluate students' performance during healthcare and community experiences.
- Healthcare and Community Experiences: Students experience hands-on activities weekly.
- Simulation: Simulated scenarios enhance learning through directly relating theory to the clinical setting in an interactive environment.
- Nursing Skills Lab: Perform psychomotor skills and/or interventions for improved patient outcomes based on evidence-based practice. Evaluated through use of skills rubric.
- Mental status and neurological assessment
- Medication administration (adult)
- IV push
- Intravenous Fluids: venipuncture and blood transfusion
- Central line: Dressing change and care
- PICC Lines: Dressing change and line access
- Managing chest drainage via closed chest drain system
- Electrocardiogram lead placement and monitoring (sinus rhythm, brady, tachy).

Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Students will demonstrate critical thinking by applying the Nursing Clinical Judgement Model to assignments, simulations, and lab/clinical performance. Students will assess clinical data to define patient needs, determine and prioritize clinical problems, formulate the nursing care plan, employ nursing interventions, and evaluate patient outcomes.

Application of the nursing process for care plans, simulations, case studies, skills demonstrations, and care of patients.
Eligible Disciplines
Nursing science/clinical practice: Any bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
