Course Description

This course focuses on the clinical experience and application of nursing care for adult/geriatric patients with common acute/chronic problems. The nursing process will be utilized as a tool to direct nursing care. Concept-based curriculum provides the structure of the curriculum and is threaded throughout the course. PREREQUISITE: NURS G160 and NURS G160C. COREQUISITE: NURS G170. Transfer Credit: CSU.

  2. Apply the nursing process to provide direct care to meet the physical and psychosocial needs of the adult/geriatric patient with common health problems that adheres to legal, ethical, and professional standards.
  3. Distinguish cultural differences to provide safe evidence-based care for the adult/geriatric patient.
  4. Apply pathophysiology of common acute/chronic health problems of the adult/geriatric patient to develop a patient-centered collaborative plan of care.
  5. Use information technology in collaboration with nursing and healthcare teams to facilitate communication and to coordinate patient care.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Perform an adult/geriatric assessment using nursing judgment and evidence-based practice.
  • 2. Demonstrate application of assessment findings in the identification of potential health problems.
  • 3. Demonstrate application of the pathophysiology of acute/chronic conditions as the basis for safe, quality patient care.
  • 4. Plan and implement evidence-based patient care founded on the nursing process to meet a patients physical, psychosocial, and cultural needs.
  • 5. Perform advanced psychomotor skills safely.
  • 6. Utilize interdisciplinary collaboration teams when providing care to the adult/geriatric patient.
  • 7. Identify one clinical agency quality improvement activity in a health care or community setting.
  • 8. Use informatics and technology, including electronic health records, to collect and document patient care for the adult/geriatric patient.
  • 9. Demonstrate adherence to legal, ethical, and professional standards of practice to provide nursing care for the adult/geriatric patient.

Lab Content

A clinical evaluation tool is used to evaluate students performance during healthcare and community experiences (see attachment). Healthcare and Community Experiences:  Students experience hands-on activities weekly. Human Patient Simulation (HPS):  Simulated scenarios enhance learning through directly relating theory to the clinical setting in an interactive environment. Skills:  Perform psychomotor skills and/or interventions for improved patient outcomes.  Based on evidence-based practice and evaluated through use of skills rubric. Medication Administration:  Oral, sublingual, rectal, transdermal, inhalational, topical, and injection routes (subcutaneous, intramuscular, intradermal, and intravenous). Adult Physical Assessment:  Demonstrate physical assessment of the adult/geriatric patient. Intravenous Fluids:  Starting an IV Tracheostomy Care and suctioning Central Line management PICC Lines:  dressing change and line access Managing chest drainage via closed chest drain system
