Course Description
This course is designed to be for the student seeking individual instruction on piano, voice, guitar, or any standard band or orchestra instrument. A performance at Faculty Juries and Concert Hour is required for each semester. Vocal and instrumental students concurrently enroll in choir or band; pianist and guitarists should consult with faculty for an appropriate concurrent course. There are fifteen private lessons per semester, with level of proficiency determined by faculty adjudication. This course may be taken 4 times. PREREQUISITE: Audition. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC. Course Objectives

Lecture Content
1. Student Performance Skills Development (individual) a. Fifteen (15) one-half (1/2) or one (1) hour private instruction/lessons per semester i. Instructors will provide written verification form to certify completion b. Preparation for individual recital performance c. Preparation for final jury d. Specific performance techniques applicable to declared performance medium e. Self-critique and evaluation to maintain improvement in an individualized performance setting 2. Student Performance Skills Development (ensemble) a. Development and application of performance skills b. Development and application of performance period practices c. Development and application of performance skills necessary to execute d. Development and application of professional etiquette standards in the music industry 3. Student Performance Skills Development (overall) a. Survey of standard literature for the individual performance medium b. Survey of the historical development for the individual performance medium c. Participation in one individual live performance each semester d. Participation in all live performances of assigned large ensemble e. Peer critique and evaluation in a performance setting f. Completion of pre-determined skill set for individual performance medium at a faculty jury

Reading Assignments
Historical texts of composers being studied and performed. Research musical terminology and the uses in various contexts. Excerpts from pedagogical texts and method books for the specific discipline.
Writing Assignments
Students will apply new performance techniques through individualized skill building, i.e. practice. Students will demonstrate weekly skill improvement through completion of specific instructor assignment. Students will develop skills required for written critiques of live performances. Both self-critique and peer critique will be utilized. Faculty Jury performance exam.
Out-of-class Assignments
Individualized practice of musical proficiencies, assigned literature, and fundamentals of the specific discipline. Attendance at live msucial performances, especially those that are discipline-specific. Performance at live musical events with large and small ensembles.
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Performance of written muaic using and insturment or voice with correct stylistic, historic, theoretical, and technical applications with a variety of musical literature from the Medieval period to present day. Utilization of both brain hemispheres, visual, aural, and kisesthetic learing modalitie, and non-verbal communication while consistently and accurately performing complex musical passages.

Eligible Disciplines
Music: Masters degree in music OR bachelors degree in music AND masters degree in humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
