Course Description

This course is for singers with two years of choral experience or one semester of private lessons or voice class. It prepares for solo and group singing by improving breathing, vocal tone, range agility, volume, diction, health, expression, and self-confidence at the second semester level. Students will sing memorized songs from musical theatre, film, folk, popular, and classical repertory in English, Italian, and students' first languages. ADVISORY: Concurrent enrollment in MUS G115 or MUS G121 for those who do not read music. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

  2. Sing four memorized songs at an intermediate level from class repertoire in a range suitable to their voice type.
  3. Sing a variety of vocal styles at an intermediate level, including a world language such as Italian, French, or German, with appropriate performance practice for each genre.

Performance Anxiety Description, causes, and self-study Meditation Relaxation response Visualization Controlled breathing Vocal Health and Development Relaxation Body alignment Breathing Vocalizing, vocal registers, ranges, and qualities Appropriate song selection Diction: pronunciation, articulation, and enunciation Intonation and pitch accuracy Song Literature Three song styles such as folk, art, theatrical, jazz, or popular Song Study and Memorization Audiation, visualization, and other "inner games" Practice resources Song Presentation Stage deportment Interpretation of text Expressiveness of voice, face, and body Rehearsing and performing with a live musician vs. recorded tracks Musicianship: intonation, rhythm, and phrasing

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

The student will evaluate their daily activities and create a practice routine. The student will evaluate their vocal abilities and requirements of selected songs, and select songs suitable for their own voice and performance needs.

Eligible Disciplines

Music: Master's degree in music OR bachelor's degree in music AND master's degree in humanities OR the equivalent. Master's degree required.
