Course Description
Formerly: Piano 1. This course provides piano instruction for students with no previous keyboard experience or no previous formal music instruction. Course develops skills in sight reading, playing by ear, keyboard harmony, scales, and keyboard technique. One hour of practice daily is assumed. Access to piano lab and practice rooms are available for no fee. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

- Course Outcomes
- Perform an entire composition of at least 16 measures, hands together with independent parts (i.e. melody in one hand with block or broken chord accompaniment in the other), observing musical expression signs, and played in a steady tempo.
- Differentiate between different time signatures.
Course Objectives
- 1. Play the conventional cadence formula, I-IV-V7-I, in block chord and broken chord forms, in both hands in major keys of C and G.
- 2. Perform a prepared piece in two keys consisting of a diatonic melody with uncomplicated rhythms and minimal hand-position shifts and an accompaniment of simple chord patterns.
- 3. Read elementary piano music at the keyboard.
- 4. Use playing mechanism (fingers, hands, wrists, and forearms) at the keyboard so that students are ready for further technical development in their piano study.
