Course Description

This course is an introductory course exploring the primary elements of tonal music and incorporates the following concepts: staff notation in treble and bass clefs, rhythm and meter, basic properties of sound, intervals, diatonic scales and triads, and diatonic chords. The course will develop skills in handwritten notation, reading music, and aural perception. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Course Objectives

• 1. Write, in staff notation, the elementary components of diatonic tonal music, including pitch and rhythm.
• 2. Construct major and minor scales and key signatures, intervals up to the octave, and commonly used diatonic triads and seventh chords.
• 3. Identify simple and compound meters, intervals up to the octave, major and minor key signatures, and commonly used diatonic triads and seventh chords.

Write exercises beginning with notation of individual pitches and rhythmic values (notes and rests ) on treble and bass clefs. 5. Write intervals, scales, and triads.

Eligible Disciplines

Music: Master's degree in music OR bachelor's degree in music AND master's degree in humanities OR the equivalent. Master's degree required.
