Course Description
This course is for non-music majors interested in learning to play the guitar. Students must furnish their own guitars. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

- Course Outcomes
- Employ diatonic notation in order to accompany oneself on the guitar.
- Play on beat and in correct time signature at a beginning level.
- Use guitar chords and keys at a beginning level.
Course Objectives
- 1. Identify fundamental aspects of beginning guitar.
- 2. Read music.
- 3. Evaluate progress in practice sessions.
- 4. Discuss historical significance of the guitar.
Lecture Content
Historical background of the Guitar Designation of various types of guitar. Nomenclature of basic stringed instruments. The historical influence of accompaniment for folk music as a vehicle. Mechanics of playing the guitar Notation and terminology. Basic first positions, scales, keys, and chords. Basic fingering techniques and rhythms. Ear training and harmonization. Transpositions.

Music: Masters degree in music OR bachelors degree in music AND masters degree in humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
