Course Description

This noncredit course is designed to further the skills of experienced musicians who play woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. Students will explore new band literature as well as techniques and methods for improving and maintaining performance success oriented toward older adults. Open Entry/Open Exit. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

Lecture Content

Musical performance of symphonic band literature Intonation Accurate interpretation and performance of written notes utilizing characteristic tone for each designated instrument. Matching intonation and tone quality within the section and ensemble. Rhythm Accurate reading and interpretation of rhythm and meter in printed music. Following the conductor for meter, pulse, precision, and rhythmic interpretation within the ensemble. Accurate performance of rhythms and meters in the section and ensemble. Articulation Correct reading, interpretation, and performance of articulation markings in printed music utilizing standard performance technique. Matching articulation style within the context of the section and ensemble Expression Correct performance of expression markings on printed music. Following and interacting with the conductors musical interpretation of instrumental music literature. Following the conductors musical expression while maintaining balance and blend within the section and ensemble. Ensemble Performance Skills Consistent utilization of symphonic band rehearsal and performance practices. Demonstration of professionalism as a musician with rehearsal and performance attendance, promptness, deportment, and participation. Demonstration of musical preparedness for rehearsal and performances. Consistent performance practices for standard symphonic band literature. Utilization of listening and performance skills to achieve proper section and ensembl blend and balance, including modulation of volume, tone, and pitch.

Eligible Disciplines

Music: Masters degree in music OR bachelors degree in music AND masters degree in humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
