Course Description

This course applies and develops the rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic materials of Music Theory I through ear training, sight singing, analysis, and dictation. ADVISORY: MUS A115. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC. C-ID MUS 125.

1. Demonstrate the ability to perform notated rhythms in a variety of time signatures.
2. Aurally identify all intervals up to one octave.
3. Aurally recognize and notate simple melodies.

Course Objectives

• I Demonstrate the ability to hear music with understanding, recognizing patterns and musical function, by
• I. 1. taking dictation of melodies featuring leaps within the primary triads.
• I. 2. taking dictation of rhythms with divided beats in a variety of meter signatures and tempos.
• I. 3. aurally identifying all intervals up to the octave—ascending, descending, and harmonic.
• I. 4. aurally identifying qualities, inversions, and soprano notes of triads.
• I. 5. aurally identifying dominant 7th chords.
• II Demonstrate the ability to "audiate" a musical score by

Lecture Content

This is a lab only course.

Lab Content

Prepare and sight-sing major and minor melodies including leaps within the primary triads. Practice common melodic patterns (arpeggios, passing tones, neighbors, etc.). Perform exercises in one or more parts (canons, duets, chorales, sing and play the piano, sing and clap rhythms, etc.) Analyze and describe phrase structure within simple melodic forms Practice melodic dictation in a variety of major and minor keys, and a variety of tempos and meter signatures Take dictation in two parts Practice common melodic patterns (arpeggios, passing tones, neighbors, etc.) Emphasize hearing of tendency tones and hearing melodies in a harmonic context Practice identification and singing of intervals Practice identification of triad and V7th-chord qualities and inversions Practice rhythmic dictation in a variety of meter signatures and tempos Practice common rhythmic patterns using division of the beat Perform and sight-read rhythmic exercises in two and three parts Perform single line rhythm and sight-singing exercises while conducting Detect errors in rhythm, pitch, and/or solfege
