Course Description

Group instruction in beginning piano. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC. C-ID: MUS 170.C-ID: MUS 170.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Perform an entire composition of at least 16 measures, hands together with independent parts (i.e. melody in one hand with block or broken chord accompaniment in the other), observing musical expression signs, played steadily with fluency.
  2. Play C Major scales within a piece with correct standard scale fingerings.
  3. Discriminate between different time signatures and perform them correctly.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Develop familiarity with appropriate piano literature.
  • 2. Perform elementary piano repertoire.
  • 3. Play and simultaneously count aloud pieces including eighth notes.
  • 4. Perform C G major scales hands alone.
  • 5. Sight read a simple melody hands separately.
  • 6. Sight read a simple melody hands together.
  • 7. Perform primary chord progressions in CG major.
