Course Description

Covers the fundamentals of photojournalism with students gaining practical experience in the creative process and techniques of making photographs for publication. Work will be assigned for publication in the campus newspaper, Coast Report. Transfer Credit: CSU. C-ID: JOUR 160.C-ID: JOUR 160.

  1. Comprehend the role of photojournalism as a part of the complete news coverage.
  2. Analyze published works and produce original photos from assigned topics for publication in newspapers and on the web.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Use the technical and aesthetic practices employed by professionals in the field of photojournalism.
  • 2. Develop ideas which can be conveyed through photography into a finished assignment of sufficient professional quality to submit to a publication.
  • 3. Meet deadlines.
  • 4. Use photo equipment.
  • 5. Edit digital images on a computer using current software and demonstrate an understanding of photo storage.
  • 6. Write effective cutlines for photos used both as free-standing art and as slideshows.
  • 7. Discuss the photographers obligation to turn in names of subjects in photos.
  • 8. Capture action in sports photography.
  • 9. Tell a story through photos, without an accompanying article.
  • 10. Edit and crop pictures.
  • 11. Analyze ethics and laws as they pertain to photojournalism.
  • 12. Demonstrate an understanding of the history of photojournalism and the use of photography in various publications.

Lecture Content

Students will learn to make pictures for publication through understanding the journalistic process and what makes the decisive moment. Students will also gain skills shooting and submitting pictures on deadline for publication through the following course outline: Introduction to the course Identification photos for press passes  Course outline Overall discussion of the media and role of photojournalism in mass media. Capturing the action - sports and action photography Feature picture and Coast Report assignment The picture story - photography as a means of telling a story without an accompanying article Picture editing and cropping - how to get the most out of a single photo and discussion of using electronic editing systems. Environmental portrait Second Coast Report assignment Photo illustration as used in newspaper editorial departments Fashion pages Food and advertising illustrations Weather picture Third Coast Report assignment Ethics and laws as they pertain to photojournalism Sports and fourth Coast Report assignment Pictorial and news Portfolio shaping Picture story Discussion of careers in photojournalism and the needs of both print and online publications. Eligible Disciplines

Journalism: Masters degree in journalism or communication with a specialization in journalism OR bachelors degree in either of the above AND masters degree in English, history, communication, literature, composition, comparative literature, any social science, business, business administration, marketing, graphics, or photography OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
