Course Description

Continuation of ITAL C180 or C180B, emphasizing acquisition of proficiency in listening comprehension, fluency in speaking, and competence in writing and reading. Cultural traditions including an introduction to Italian folkways, arts, architecture, literature, drama, dance, geography, history, government, and religions will be emphasized. PREREQUISITE: ITAL C180 or ITAL C180B. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

  1. Demonstrate awareness of significant differences in culture-specific behaviors between the cultures of the Italian-speaking world and the United States.
  2. Demonstrate oral/aural and written competency in Italian at the advanced elementary level.

Instructional Techniques

A variety of activities, (including lecture employing current technology and/or handouts, video and/or audio presentations, pair and group work) will be employed. Intensive and extensive listening and reading in the target language is directed toward raising learners awareness of the lexical nature of language. Activities will be structured to enable the learners to comprehend lexical phrases as unanalyzed "chunks" and to use whole phrases without necessarily having to analyze their constituent parts.

Reading Assignments

Examples of assignments at the continuing elementary level: Reading assignments from text and workbook regarding various Italian-speaking countries Customs, similarities and differences among the Italian speaking countries Contrast of linguistic differences among the various Italian speaking countries

Writing Assignments

Write a short paragraph on some of the following topics: agriculture geography population and ethnic groups history local celebrations celebrities and newsworthy people

Out-of-class Assignments

Examples of assignments include library assignments. Research the country of Italy with the goal of writing an paragraph on aspects of its geography, culture, and history. Lab and textbook exercises to practice concepts, both oral and written, at the continuing elementary level.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Activities which require learners to become more active and questioning critical thinkers such as group work, project-based work and presentations which involve comparing and contrasting; classifying; evaluating; cause and effect; ranking; identifying right from wrong and facts from opinion; and summarizing will be employed. Foreign languages: Masters degree in the language being taught OR bachelors degree in the language being taught AND masters degree in another language or linguistics OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
