Course Description
Develops the fundamental ability to both comprehend and converse in daily spoken Italian. Introduces early reading and writing skills, as well as fundamental aspects of the Italian culture. ADVISORY: Students who have completed two years of high school Italian with a grade of C or better should enroll in ITAL C185. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

- Demonstrate an awareness of significant differences in culture-specific behaviors between the cultures of the Italian-speaking world and the United States.

Instructional Techniques
A variety of activities, (including lecture employing current technology and/or handouts, video and/or audio presentations, pair and group work) will be employed. Intensive and extensive listening and reading in the target language is directed toward raising learners awareness of the lexical nature of language. Activities will be structured to enable the learners to comprehend lexical phrases as unanalyzed "chunks" and to use whole phrases without necessarily having to analyze their constituent parts.
Reading Assignments
Examples of reading assignments (as requested above in instructions). Reading assignment on non-verbal communication among the Italian-speaking cultures. Italian-speaking countries whose first or second language is Italian.
Writing Assignments
Examples of assignments (very limited at this level of language acquisition) Research and write an short paragraph on a Italian-speaking country Brief personal introduction in Italian.
Out-of-class Assignments
Examples of assignments (as requested in instructions) Reading and listening comprehension activities. Lab assignments to practice vocabulary and grammar concepts. Research difference in dialects among the Italian-speaking countries (Italian as 1st or 2nd language).
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Activities which require learners to become more active and questioning critical thinkers such as group work, project-based work and presentations which involve comparing and contrasting; classifying; evaluating; cause and effect; ranking; identifying right from wrong and facts from opinion; and summarizing will be employed.

Foreign languages: Masters degree in the language being taught OR bachelors degree in the language being taught AND masters degree in another language or linguistics OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
