Course Description

A chronological study of costume designs from ancient times to the present. Emphasis is placed on the identification of apparel design details, the relation of recurring style trends to contemporary fashions, and sociological, economic, and political factors affecting clothing through the centuries. Transfer Credit: CSU.

  1. Locate and utilize specific research data to differentiate fashion time periods and explain the economic, sociological and political factors affecting each.
  2. Compare and contrast current fashions to previous fashion cycles.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Identify garments and design details from ancient times to the present.
  • 2. Explain the economic, sociological and political factors affecting specific period clothing styles.
  • 3. Compare and contrast clothing styles from various time periods.
  • 4. Analyze present fashions in relation to previous fashion cycles.
  • 5. Use the proper terminology; explain in detail clothing through the ages.
  • 6. Locate specific research data going directly to the historical source
  • 7. Organize fashion periods using specific knowledge to differentiate one time period from another.

Slides - provide visuals to identify item discussed in the lecture Books - to supplement lecture and slide visuals for students to view during breaks Field trips - to enhance lecture and slide data with actual historical works. Garments and Accessories - period pieces for hands on evaluation.

Research project requires organization of research materials.  All projects require outline, body and bibliography using proper writing organization.  Skill projects also require written materials explaining methods used. 1-2 hours per week.

Eligible Disciplines

Family and consumer and studies/home economics: Masters degree in family and consumer studies, life management/home economics, or home economics education OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in child development, early childhood education, human development, gerontology, fashion, clothing and textiles, housing/interior design, foods/nutrition, or dietetics and food administration OR the equivalent. Masters degree required. Fashion and related technologies (merchandising, design, production): Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
