Course Description

An intensive beginning English grammar course for non-native English speakers. A survey of simple sentence structures in American English. Emphasis on developing proficiency and fluency in constructing grammatically correct English sentences. ADVISORY: New students are advised to complete the ESL placement process in order to select their initial course level. Noncredit. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

Lecture Content

THE VERB BE: Present The present of be: statements That is / those are: possessive adjectives The present of be: yes / no questions, questions with who or what THE PRESENT PROGRESSIVE The present progressive: statements with and without  objects The present progressive: yes / no questions The present progressive: wh-  questions   THE SIMPLE PAST AND SIMPLE PRESENT TENSES The simple past: regular and irregular verbs The simple present: singular and plural subjects Uses of the simple present

Instructional Techniques

Instructors will deliver short lectures followed by interactive pair and small group work: conversations, cooperative problem solving, written exercises, and interactive multimedia demonstrations and exercises.

Reading Assignments

Students will read brief selections and write answers to comprehension questions.

Writing Assignments

Students will complete writing exercises individually and in pairs and correct them in class.

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will complete writing exercises in their texts at home and correct them in class.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Instructors will observe, evaluate, and correct student performance in pair and small-group conversation exercises requiring them to identify and explain the main idea in a simple reading passage.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Students will read passages and write answers to comprehension questions.

Eligible Disciplines

ESL: Masters degree in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or education with a TESL emphasis OR bachelors degree in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND masters degree in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech, or any foreign language OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
