Course Description
This course is designed to enhance the knowledge and usage of advanced English grammar and to improve grammatical accuracy in writing and to develop strong editing skills for advanced second-language students. Individual attention is given to sentence structure and usage problems (verb tenses, passive voice, word and verb forms) needed for ENGL C1000 and other college-level courses. Noncredit. ADVISORY: Concurrent enrollment in ENGL C1000; This supplemental class is geared for second language students who are enrolled in ENGL C1000 and other college level courses and need supplemental help in grammar. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

- Students will identify and use verb tenses and clauses in grammatically correct sentences, using various sentence types.
- Students will self-correct their common second-language errors.
Course Objectives
- 1. Identify and produce all the 12 verb tenses in English.
- 2. Identify and produce clauses (adjective, adverbial, and noun)
- 3. Identify and combine different sentence types (simple, compound, and complex).
- 4. Identify and produce passive voice structures.
- 5. Review and self-correct typical common second language errors.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Students will analyze and critique their work and other students work for grammatical accuracy. Students will learn to identify and to correct typical second language errors.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Students will write sentences and paragraphs targeting specific grammar structures. Students will also work on group presentations to identify and solve typical second language errors in writing.
Eligible Disciplines
ESL: Masters degree in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or education with a TESL emphasis OR bachelors degree in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND masters degree in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech, or any foreign language OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
