Course Description

This course is a broad introduction to literary genres, elements and techniques in cultural/historical context. Literary works will be chosen from all three genres and various historical periods. The readings will illustrate various genres, historical contexts and cultural contexts, as well as the relationships between them. PREREQUISITE: ENGL C1000 or ENGL C1000E. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC. C-ID: ENGL 120. C-ID: ENGL 120.

  5. 4 Compare and contrast the major theories of relevant critics in this field and compile these theories in written work to create a more developed and scholarly analysis of a subject relevant to the period.
  6. Compose a paper synthesizing relevant and appropriate scholarly sources to augment, strengthen, and complement an original analysis.

  • 6. Explain how the formal elements of (selected) literary works generate meaning.

Lecture Content

Genres Fiction, such as novel, novella, and short story. Poetry Drama Literary elements: plot, theme, character, setting, style, tone, figurative language. Literary techniques Appropriate to the Major Genres Elements of Fiction Elements of Poetry Elements of Drama Literature in Historical Context Literary historical periods such as Biblical, Classical, Medieval, Renaissance, Reformation, Romantic, Modern, Postmodern. Literary forms typical of the various historical periods Literature in Cultural Context General cultural categories such as East/West, Old World/New World, as well as specific cultural or ethnic categories. Literary forms popular within or utilized by various cultures, such as magical realist novel/Latin America.

Required Reading such as selections from an anthology of literature. Selected works from unanthologized sources. Selected historical and cultural texts. Selected novel(s)/novellas.

Writing Assignments

Out-of-class analytical essays including research support (Recommended:  2-3 essays) In-class essays (Recommended: midterm and final) Homework writing (such as journals, written responses to questions, and/or online discussions) Recommended written word count for the semester 5000-6000 words divided between the above mentioned assignments.

Out-of-class Assignments

Group projects, optional attendance of plays, poetry readings or other performances.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

1. Analyzing and interpreting reading assignments in-class discussion, group work, and writing. 2.Analyzing the interpreting aspects of each genre in its historical and cultural context 3.Demonstrating knowledge of the genres and context through exercises such as scansion of a poem, blocking of a scene, creative in-class presentations, and written assignments

1. Analyzing the various aspects of each genre in journals, in-class work, or homework. 2. Taking essay tests, objective tests, midterm, and final.3. Writing analytical papers.

Eligible Disciplines

English: Masters degree in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
