Course Description
This course is designed to provide non-native English speaking students additional opportunities to master various advanced grammatical structures. In this advanced course, students continue to expand their understanding of the English verb system and sentence structures, with a review of modals, gerunds, infinitives, and complex sentence structures. Students will practice identifying and producing these target structures in spontaneous oral and written communication. This is an open-entry course. Noncredit. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

- Students will construct sentences of varied structures including adjective clauses and phrases, adverbial clauses and phrases, and various sentence openers
- Students will be able to vary sentence structures to improve the delivery and style of a written or spoken text.
- Students will utilize advanced verbal forms with increased accuracy in controlled situations.
Course Objectives
- 1. construct sentences with various adverb clauses
- 2. reduce adverbial clauses into phrases when possible
- 3. recognize and use patterns of adjective clauses
- 4. reduce adjective clauses when possible
- 5. use a variety of sentence openers including participial adjectives, adverbs, and adverbial clauses or phrases
- 6. construct sentences with gerunds and/or infinitives
- 7. construct sentences with modals of certainty and obligation in the past and the present
- 8. use definite and indefinite articles with increased accuracy

Reading Assignments
Students will spend at least 2 hours each week reading selected articles in newspapers, magazines, and college-level textbooks, both online and in print identifying various target structures, their use, meaning and effect on style.
Writing Assignments
Students will spend a minimum of 2 hours each composing and editing written academic and nonacademic texts applying the target grammar structures.
Out-of-class Assignments
Students will spend a minimum of 2 hours each composing and editing oral texts applying the target grammar structures.
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Students will evaluate the needs of an imaginary rhetorical situation and select the most appropriate sentence structures to convey meaning.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Students will apply their knowledge of sentence structures, modals and verbals to edit their writings and oral presentations.
Eligible Disciplines
ESL: Masters degree in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or education with a TESL emphasis OR bachelors degree in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND masters degree in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech, or any foreign language OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
