Course Description

This is a course designed to give English learners an overview of the U.S. health industry. Students will learn common chronic medical conditions, health professions and procedures to help them navigate the healthcare system and introduce them to the medical health professions in the U.S. Students will also practice various language elements to help them be better prepared to advocate for themselves as patients. Noncredit. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

  1. Students will be able to describe common medical conditions including common symptoms and the effects on the body systems.
  2. Students will identify different medical settings, professions and common procedures.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Students will be able to name common medical conditions, symptoms, body systems, medical settings, professions and common procedures with correct pronunciation.
  • 2. Students will be able to decode common handwritten and typed notes used in the medical field including progress notes, discharge notes, medicine instructions.
  • 3. Students will be able to identify symptoms associated with common medical conditions.
  • 4. Students will be able to explain the basic effects common medical conditions have on the appropriate body systems.
  • 5. Students will be to identify a variety of ailments treated in different medical settings.
  • 6. Students will be able to describe common medical procedures.
  • 7. Students will be able to identify common medical procedures performed by various medical professions.

Reading Assignments

Students will read about different medical conditions and symptoms at least 1 hour per week.

Writing Assignments

Students will practice writing emails to describe medical symptoms and needs. (approximately 1 hour per week)

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will study vocabulary, practice pronunciation and complete grammar exercises necessary to communicate in health-related situations. (approximately 2 hours a week)

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

In a role play situation, students will be able to apply their knowledge of medical professions and procedures to identify the services needed to address imaginary medical conditions and symptoms with at least 70% accuracy.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Students will be able to write short emails to various health care professionals in response to an imaginary medical scenario with at least 70% accuracy.

Eligible Disciplines

ESL: Masters degree in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or education with a TESL emphasis OR bachelors degree in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND masters degree in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech, or any foreign language OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
