Course Description
This course provides an opportunity for teachers to integrate social media, video and graphic tools and assessments and teaching strategies into their lessons. Participants may discuss and critically examine social, emotional and practical implications that now shape students' digital media literacy and usage. Learning the various nuances of social media platforms is key in designing effective instructional materials. Using content creation tools such as Canva and video/audio editors, students will create and repurpose digital media in the framework of how media is currently designed, shared, and consumed by students, teachers, and parents. Transfer Credit: CSU.

- Produce and/or repurpose instructional materials, using graphic, video, audio, and social media content creation tools, following the framework of how media is currently designed, shared and consumed by students, teachers, and parents.
Course Objectives
- 1. Explain the varied nuances of social media platforms currently affecting students
- 2. Research and analyze the impact of digital media on learning
- 3. Integrate media design principles and learning theories with effective media production practices
- 4. Create instructional materials and lessons incorporating student created digital media products
- 5. Design, produce, evaluate, deconstruct, and remix digital media materials

Instructional Techniques
A variety of instructional techniques will be employed to encompass different student learning styles. These may include, but are not limited to, lecture, discussion, projects and small group activities. Instruction will be supplemented, where appropriate, by digital media presentations resources, guest speakers and field trips.
Reading Assignments
Complete reading assignments assigned from the textbook, supplemental readings, handouts, internet resources, and any assignments from Coastlines Library.
Writing Assignments
Weekly projects, plans, revisions, discussion topic responses that will demonstrate skills application through authentic quality control projects.
Out-of-class Assignments
Read/View the required materials, conduct appropriate research, prepare documents/plans, complete and revise projects, and prepare for quizzes/exams.
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Identifying and applying the appropriate software tools to demonstrate competency with simulated/authentic tasks in digital media literacy projects.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Weekly projects, plans, revisions, written reviews/critiques and discussion topic responses that will demonstrate skills application and problem solving skills through authentic projects.
Eligible Disciplines
Education: Masters degree in education OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
