Course Description
Learn strategies for effective tutoring. Discover how to motivate, foster independence, stimulate active learning, and build confidence in the learner. Identify factors that affect student learning such as language and cultural differences; learn how to handle difficult tutoring situations, and to identify different learning styles. A three-hour service learning component will be required. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Students will demonstrate critical thinking by completing assignments that require planning, problem solving, and the application of tutoring theory to specific situations. Students will also demonstrate critical thinking by way of class discussion which includes an online discussion forum and the creation of a tutoring philosophy statement.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Students will be required to provide written responses to solve specific tutoring problem scenarios. These submissions will be evaluated for application of critical thought and the practicality and elegance of the solution. Students will also craft a Tutoring Philosophy Statement in which they apply what they have learned toward a cogent and coherent system of behaviors and beliefs.
Eligible Disciplines
Education: Masters degree in education OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
